If you haven’t heard about essential oils, are you even living on the planet Earth? Just kidding. Many people, like myself, had no idea what all the fuss was about essential oils. In fact, I didn’t even know where to begin to inform myself about this recent buzz. Turns out, essential oils are plant extracts which are being used as substitutes for many synthetic products, and have been used for thousands of years!
Millions of people are crediting their well-being to essential oils. It seems like there is an essential oil for everything from a natural way to clean homes to stress-relief. People are looking for a way to minimize the amount of chemicals in their lives, thus turning to essential oils instead of using products with chemicals to solve common problems.
So will diffusing Lavender help your baby sleep through the night? I sat down with Ani Simonoff, a DoTERRA Wellness Advocate, Nurse, Lactation Consultant, and mama to two adorable boys. Here’s what she had to say about essential oils:
Using essential oils has been a huge part of my life over the last 3 years, pretty much since my first son was born. I started using them on the off chance that they would boost my milk supply, and when they did my curiosity was piqued. I started exploring more about them and since then we have been able to decrease the toxic load in our home (we use oils and doTERRA products to clean our counters and floors, purify our air, etc.), boost our immune systems (stay away flu season!), and really change how we see our health and wellness, not only for my husband and I, but for our kids as well. doTERRA’s essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, which means they have been third party tested and held up to rigorous standards to ensure that what you are getting is absolutely pure and safe for use. As parents, we all have to make the decisions we feel comfortable with when it comes to using products on our children and in our homes, and using doTERRA’s products has been an easy one for me because of the high standard they hold for their products.
So are they just pretty scents that make you feel good? Essential oils are so much more than that! They come from the compounds within a plant that help that plant, live, survive, and thrive. Because we humans (and pets too!) are also carbon based organisms, we can use these awesome compounds to support our bodies to do the same. So if a compound helps protect the tree from bacteria invasion, it can help support our bodies against invaders too! You can use oils aromatically, topically, and internally using the proper safety precautions and dilution.
In our home, we use oils on our kids to promote rest, to help manage rough emotions, and to help empower our boys to know that they can use natural solutions to support their bodies. Our boys have a regimen, morning and night and they put their oils on themselves now (even our 21 month old!), talk about empowerment! Here are a few oils we use regularly to promote health and wellness:
|To promote a restful night||Serenity™, Lavender, Cedarwood|
|To help boost our immune systems||On Guard™, Melaleuca (aka Tea Tree), Oregano|
|To manage the wild emotions of a 21 month old and 4 year old||Cedarwood, Wild Orange, Balance™, Peace™,|
|To clean our countertops and floors||On Guard™, Lemon, Wild Orange|
It’s important to be knowledgeable about using oils and remember that all our bodies are unique, so you have to find what works best for you or your child, and above all, it’s always important to learn how to use these powerful oils safely.
